Privacy Policy — Your Roomie

Your Roomie ("we," "us," or "our") operates the Your Roomie mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our App.

By using Your Roomie, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

1. INFORMATION WE COLLECT

Information you provide directly:

Account information: name, email address, age, gender
Profile information: bio, photos, location, budget, lifestyle preferences
Identity verification: government-issued ID (used only for verification, see Section 5)
Listings: rental details and photos you choose to post
Messages: content of messages you send to other users
Payment information: processed securely by Stripe (we do not store your card details)

Information collected automatically:

Device information (device type, operating system)
Usage data (features used, time spent in app)
Approximate location (if you enable location features)

2. HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION

We use your information to:

Create and manage your account
Match you with potential roommates and rentals
Enable communication between matched users
Verify user identities to keep the community safe
Process payments for Pro subscriptions and credits
Send you notifications about matches and messages
Improve and maintain the App
Prevent fraud, abuse, and violations of our Terms

3. HOW WE SHARE YOUR INFORMATION

With other users: Your profile information (name, age, photos, bio, lifestyle tags, general location) is visible to other users as part of the matching experience. We never share your exact address, unit number, contact details, or identity documents with other users. You control what personal details you share in chat. With service providers: We use trusted third parties to operate the App:

Supabase (database and authentication)
Stripe (payment processing)
Google (location services)
Expo (app infrastructure and notifications)

We do NOT sell your personal information to anyone. Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect the safety of our users.

3A. RENTAL APPLICATIONS

If a host invites you to apply for a listing and you choose to submit an application, we collect additional information including your date of birth, phone number, current address, employment status, employer or school, monthly income, desired move-in date, pet information, and reference contact details.

This information is shared only with the host of that specific listing. It is not visible to other users, is not used for advertising, and is not sold.

You choose whether to submit an application. If you consent to a credit or background check, that authorization is passed to the host — Your Roomie does not perform credit or background checks itself.

Submitting an application does not create a tenancy. No tenancy exists until a lease or other written rental agreement is signed and any required payment is made and accepted. Your Roomie is not a party to any rental agreement.

Both you and the host can download a PDF copy of your submitted application at any time.

4. YOUR PRIVACY CHOICES

You can:

Edit or delete your profile information at any time
Control location sharing in Settings
Delete your account entirely (this removes your data from our active systems)
Opt out of push notifications

5. IDENTITY VERIFICATION

When you verify your identity, we collect a government-issued ID solely to confirm you are a real person. Your ID is not shared with other users and is not displayed on your profile. Identity documents are securely deleted within 30 days of verification being completed.

6. DATA SECURITY

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections and secure infrastructure. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. ANTI-DISCRIMINATION

Your Roomie is committed to providing a fair and inclusive platform. We do not permit filtering or discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, disability, or other protected grounds under the Canadian Human Rights Act and applicable provincial human rights legislation.

8. CHILDREN'S PRIVACY

Your Roomie is not intended for anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect information from minors. If we learn we have collected data from someone under 18, we will delete it.

9. DATA RETENTION

We retain your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we remove your personal data from our active systems, except where we are required to retain certain information by law.

10. YOUR RIGHTS (CANADA)

Under Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA and applicable provincial laws), you have the right to:

Access the personal information we hold about you
Request correction of inaccurate information
Withdraw consent for the collection and use of your information
File a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada

11. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the App or by email.
